Gear Hut Spring & Summer Rules and Dates:

Our Spring & Summer Consignment Season runs from April 1 - August 30. As trails dry out, rivers pick up, and camping season ramps in Reno-Tahoe, we've got campers, boaters and bikers looking to gear up.

Early consignors consistently have the most success; your items hit the floor when people are actively shopping, not after the market is saturated or smoke season hits (we're keeping our fingers and toes crossed it's not a bad year!)

1) What We’re Accepting thru August

We focus on warm-weather gear that people are actively using right now:

  • Camping Setups: backpacking tents, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, cots, chairs, etc

  • Camp Accessories: camp stoves, camp kitchen gear, water storage, lighting, etc

  • Hiking Gear: trekking poles, daypacks and backpacks, hiking footwear (boots, sandals & trailrunners)

  • Paddling Equipment: kayaks, WW boats, SUPs, inflatables, river tubes, paddles, PFDs, drysuits, wetsuits, drybags, etc

  • Mountain Bikes: bike racks, bikepacking accessories and bags, pumps, mtn bike apparel/footwear, helmets, etc.

  • Summer Apparel: tanks, shorts, sunhats and sandals. Lightweight and technical/performance materials.

As always, we accept high quality, technical brands that are in good condition (MSR, Nemo, Patagonia, Specialized, Fox, NRS, Arcteryx, Jackson, Osprey, Topo Designs, Mountain Hardwear, Sea to Summit, etc). We do not accept vintage or outdated gear.

Intake Hours: Summer gear and apparel can be dropped off without an appointment: Tuesday thru Friday & Sundays. Saturdays are by appointment only (reserved for LARGE drop offs).

2) Prep Matters: Clean Gear Sells

Dust it off, wipe it down! Condition is one of the biggest factors in whether your gear sells. Everything should be clean, functional, and complete. We WILL deny your unwashed pile of laundry.

For bikes and boats especially, presentation matters. A quick wash, basic tune, and making sure everything works properly can directly impact how quickly your item sells, and for how much.

**If you've recently had your bike serviced, bring the paperwork and we can attach it to the tag to increase sellability!

3) What We’re NOT Accepting:

These are items that we do not sell on consignment due to our market, safety or space issues. Pending space, we will accept noted ones as Donation ONLY.

  • Outdated/15+ year old backpacks/fannypacks/duffles: Donation Only

  • Snorkeling gear/fins: Donation Only

  • Watches and cameras (technology just doesn't move): Donation Only

  • External frame backpacks: Donation Only

  • Plastic mountaineering boots: Donation Only

  • Fly fishing rods, reels and small accessories: Donation Only

  • Unpackaged steri pens and unpackaged lifestraws

  • Delaminating tents or incomplete tents

  • Anything glass

  • Climbing soft goods

  • Dusty playa gear

  • Bike trainers (take these to Reno Bike Project!)

  • Road biking gear, jerseys or footwear (take these to Reno Bike Project!)

  • Hunting weapons

  • Department store or fast fashion brands

  • Heavily worn shoes or missing insoles

    • We have shoe recycling drop off as an option for you.

  • Wrong Season: Ski Gear/Heavy winter gear (jackets, snow pants, insulated boots)

    • Winter Consignment will open in October.

4) Selling Bikes at Gear Hut

Gear Hut specialize in rehoming bikes to first time riders or intermediate riders who are getting their first upgrade, with most sales landing under $1,900. Our customers are typically budget-conscious locals looking for reliable, trail-ready setups.

Bikes must be clean and fully operational: shifting, braking, and ready to ride. Older or outdated bikes can be harder to move, especially if they’re priced too high. Our goal is to get your unused bike out of your garage and onto the trail. We use the private range of Bicycle Blue Book as a starting point when valuing bikes, and will price up for in demand sizes, features, brands. Check out more about our bike selling process HERE!

Gear Hut does NOT accept: anything road biking/cycling. We specialize in mountain biking and gravel biking (adventure bike packing style). We also do NOT sell small specific bike parts. We do NOT accept bike trainers.

5) Boats Intake: By appointment!

Getting these up on the wall mid day is impossible! Big boats will be dropped off via appointment before we open or after we close!
Getting these up on the wall mid day is impossible! Big boats will be dropped off via appointment before we open or after we close!

Hard boat drop off is by APPOINTMENT ONLY! Boats will be accepted pre/post shop hours as getting them into the space is too difficult to do during business hours. For a price quote and schedule: email info@gearhutreno.com with photos and model information.

Also note: Our goal is to get your boat out on the water and to keep the flow of kayaks steady! Properly priced boats move within 3 weeks. Also note seasonal timing: especially for anything that relies on higher cfs (aka your WW boat prob wont sell at a competitive price in July), get those playboats in NOW. Read more about how we price boats HERE!

In demand: Inflatable SUPs, kayaks and pack rafts! You do NOT need an appointment to drop off an inflatable.

6) Space Is Limited! Yes, we'd love a bigger store... but do you want to pay commerical rent in this economy?

We only have room for a set number of bikes and boats at any given time. Once we’re full, it becomes a one-in, one-out system! There is not a wait-list, you can always give us a call to check on space for the day 775-219-4612.

That means first come, first dibs. If consigning is on your list this year, early drop-offs secure space and give your gear the best chance to sell.

7) Apparel turnover is KEY in Summer

Our goal: price apparel fairly so it actually sells. In flow of consignment has to match selling rates, otherwise we shut down consignment and quality clothes aren't getting rehomed.

When shopping for used shorts and tanks, most folks have a mental cut off on pricing that they'll spend- that means most shorts, tanks, field shirts and summer apparel will be priced UNDER $18.

We are limiting apparel drop offs to 15 pieces/person/drop-off. WHY? Because if one XS person drops off 35 shirts, then we only have XS! Limiting allows for a better size spread within the shop as we can serve more people.

Exception: we can sell your sunshirts for $300 (JKJK, but for real, hooded sunshirts are our most popular item in summer!)

8) End of Season Sale and Pick Up Dates!!

Intake runs through August 30... BUT due to space, boat intake may shut down sooner. We'll host an end of season clear out sale from Sept 15-20. NOTE: Any summer item not picked up by Sept 27 will be auto-converted to shop inventory and stored off site as we make room for our winter season which opens in October.

Consignors with unsold summer gear will have 2 opportunities to pick up their unsold gear: Pre-Sale Collection from Sept 1-13 and Post Sale Collection from Sept 17-27.

Items subject to this policy include:

  • Summer apparel/footwear: shorts, tanks, sundresses, skirts, sandals

  • Anything paddling related: boats, PFDs, wetsuits, drybags, etc

  • Bike apparel/footwear: chamois, shorts, jerseys, shoes, helmets, pads

  • Bike racks (for your car)

    • WE WILL KEEP bikes and bike accessories year-round; these are NOT subject to the end of season sale.
