First: We are a consignment shop, we do not buy gear outright.

If you’re looking to sell used skis, snowboards, boots, or winter gear in Reno, Gear Hut is your go to community‑powered outdoor gear consignment shop. We help you rehome quality gear quickly, safely, and affordably without the hassle of selling online. Before dropping off your items, please review our updated 2026/2027 winter consignment policies to ensure your gear is accepted and priced to sell:

1. Cleanliness & Condition (Most Important for Sellability)

Buyers searching for used skis in Reno are looking for clean, modern gear. A quick wipe‑down dramatically increases your chances of acceptance.

Requirements:

  • Hardgoods must be modern, safe, and functional

  • No coreshots, delamination, blown edges, or “project skis”

  • Apparel must be clean, stain‑free, odor‑free, and fully functional

  • Gear must have real resale value to make it onto the racks or shelves. Space is IN DEMAND, we get up to 20 consignors a day fighting for hanger and shelf space, we have to be picky to curate solid options for the community.

Dirty gear = denied intake. Clean gear = higher sellability and better pricing.

2. Age Requirement for Skis, Snowboards & Bindings

To keep our inventory relevant for shoppers looking to buy used skis, we only accept downhill gear from 2016 or newer (max 10 years old).

Older downhill gear (pre‑2015) will be suggested to be disposed of via our recycling program (see section 10).

3. Drop‑Off Details

  • Winter consignment runs from October 14 thru Feb 14.

  • No Saturday consignment intake

  • Limit: 15 items per consignor per drop off. This ensures high‑quality intake and prevents closures due to overwhelming volume.

If you have a larger drop‑off? Email info@gearhutreno.com to schedule with us. As a reminder. To increase chances of sellability, drop off your gear BEFORE January! Sales drop off significantly as the season progresses.

4. Snowboards & Bindings

Snowboards and bindings are consigned separately. When dropping off bindings, please include all screws, pucks, and hardware. Please PRE remove your bindings.

Exception: Splitboards + bindings may be sold together as a complete kit. Older 3D boards and demo/rental boards will be sold with bindings.

5. Resort/Alpine Skis & Drilling Policy

Skis must be consigned with bindings, ready to ski. Bindings must be fully functional. We do NOT sell stand alone resort bindings. Skis should not be mounted/drilled more than 2x.

Exception: Flat skis accepted only if:

  • NEW/undrilled

  • Or Moments, because Reno loves Moments

6. Cross‑Country and Nordic Gear Rules

We accept ONLY these XC binding systems on consignment:

  • NNN & NNN BC

  • TURNAMIC

  • Prolink

  • Modern 3 Pin

All other systems (SNS Pilot / SNS Profile/older 3Pin) are accepted as donation only as it is older technology with less universal compatibility.

7. Seasonal Pick‑Up Deadlines

As always, snow gear and apparel are considered seasonal items which means that they are subject to seasonal pick ups (your responsibility to keep track!):

  • We host an end of season sale to encourange unsold inventory to move, During the sale, discounts affect both consignor and store splits. If you do not want your items in the sale, you will have the chance to collect unsold gear at the beginning of March.

  • Items not collected by March 28 will be donated or converted to store inventory

As we approach the end of season, you will receive an email from us if your gear or apparel is unsold and subject to upcoming pick up dates/sales.

8. Pricing Philosophy (How We Price Your Used Skis)

We keep winter gear affordable and accessible while helping you sell used skis and snowboards quickly. Our goal is turnover, getting as many folks out there as we can... not to sit on stale, overpriced inventory.

Key reminders:

  • Gear depreciates immediately, even in excellent condition

  • Note that new skis often go on sale for up to 40% off at end of season through typical retailers

  • If you're looking to make back what you spent - consignment isn't the way to sell for you.

Realistic pricing:

  • Hardgoods from 2020+ → 30–45% of original MSRP depending on condition, size, demand.

  • Skis from 2015–2019 → $125–$225, depending on condition and demand

  • Snowboards from 2015–2019 → $45–$140, depending on condition and demand

This pricing strategy helps your gear sell faster and keeps us competitive for people searching “used skis Reno” or “affordable ski gear near me.” And with limited floor space, it allows us to keep a steady flow of gear moving through the shop.

9. Weekly Inventory Updates

Check our in‑store Not Taking board and social media for bi‑weekly updates on categories we’re full on or temporarily pausing.

If your item is denied because we’re full, there's a high chance it’s not you, it's our space constraints. (Unless you saw we weren’t accepting it and brought it anyway… ya ding dong.) Or if it's on our list in section 11 (what we don't take).

10. Quality Control & Ski Recycling Program

If your skis or snowboard don’t pass Quality Control—especially older or damaged gear—they may be directed to our recycling program.

Recycling cost:

  • $3 per pair of skis or snowboards

  • Boots cannot be recycled (no facility accepts them)

We only recycle skis, snowboards, and poles due to space limitations.

11. What We Don’t Take (Important for Anyone Trying to Sell Used Skis or Winter Gear)

To keep our racks full of high‑quality, in‑demand gear for shoppers looking to buy used skis, snowboards, and winter apparel, we do not accept the following items for consignment:

  • Department store brands: (Target, Costco, Kohl’s, Old Navy, JCPenney, ZeroXposure, 32 Degrees, Tek Gear, etc.) Unfortunately, these items don’t hold resale value and aren’t designed for Sierra conditions - our goal is to offer high quality technical gear that will perform.

  • Co‑branded or corporate‑logo gear: Jackets or apparel with embroidered company logos, event branding, or promotional graphics do not have resale value.

  • Race gear: Race skis, race boots, race suits, and race‑specific equipment have extremely limited demand and are not accepted for consignment. It's just not our demographic of shoppers and we need to prioritize space to what moves.

  • Boot liners (loose or replacement liners): We do not consign standalone boot liners -they just do not move/we do not have the space.

  • Ice Skates: While I'd love to be able to get folks out for alpine skating, we just don't have the space to properly stock sizes.

  • Heavily worn fleece: Especially in high pile or sherpa pieces, it gets matted and stained at the neck and wrists. If it looks like a sad stuffed animal, we'll pass. We also get overwhelmed with very basic thinner Columbia and North Face thinner fleece midlayers. To keep these moving, we price most of them between $8-10.
