Press Release: New Business in the Wells District, increases access to the outdoors

Updated: Aug 9, 2018

Gear Hut will be opening its doors for a soft opening on August 18th at 11am. Gear Hut is a new consignment shop specializing in outdoor recreational equipment, for activities such as camping, hiking, backpacking, skiing, biking and kayaking. Reno’s adventure enthusiasts will be able to consign their old gear for cash or store credit, and shop for “new to them” items.

Located at 1245 South Wells Avenue, Gear Hut will be open 5 days a week, Wednesday through Sunday from 11am - 7pm. Rusty Donlon and Leah Wzientek are the owners of the new venture. The couple moved to the region in 2016, sucked in by the never ending list of recreational activities from skiing and snowshoeing in the mountains, to exploring hotsprings in the desert, to world class climbing throughout the year. The Reno Tahoe area has a plethora of free access to the outdoors, with National Forests, BLM land, free beaches and a general “don’t fence me in” mindset as well as a tight knit outdoor community. Rusty and Leah quickly recognized the lack of local shops dedicated to helping people gear up for all of the adventure opportunities in the area and their goal is to make the outdoors more accessible for all of Reno, through low priced used gear.

Gear Hut embraces a new outlook on consumerism - attempting to use gear through the full product life. Most outdoor equipment is well designed and outlives its usefulness for the first owner. Gear Hut’s plan is to pass along the ability to adventure through consignment; Giving consumers lower costs for gently used gear, increasing access for many who cannot afford brand new boots, sleeping bags, etc. It also allows newer recreators a chance to test out new hobbies, without commiting to the costly new prices of mainstream retailers. Additionally, Gear Hut provides experienced enthusiasts the opportunity to consign last year’s model or old items clogging up gear closets for cash or store credit. Gear Hut’s ultimate goal is to redistribute gear so it doesn’t end prematurely in a landfill.

Have you been wanting to embrace all the beautiful Reno Tahoe trails you see shared over instagram, but haven’t been able to commit to a pair of $120 hiking boots? Pick up a used pair for half the price at Gear Hut! Or did you buy a backpack online, it wasn’t quite right and it’s been sitting in the closet for the past 6 months? Make some cash by consigning it through Gear Hut! Check them out at their Soft Opening on August 18th and 19th from 11am to 7pm where you can start dropping items off for consignment and check out their location on S. Wells Ave!
