Scout Troop 1847 & Gear Hut Team Up to Divert Burning Man Waste from Landfills
Reno, NV — In the spirit of Leave No Trace and community stewardship, Scout Troop 1847 and local outdoor gear shop Gear Hut are joining forces to host a post-Burning Man collection event aimed at disposing trash and keeping valuable goods out of the landfill by giving them a second life.
From August 30 to September 1, participants and Burners alike are encouraged to drop off unopened food, bagged trash, bottled water, bikes and reusable camping gear in one simple drop off. Items will be sorted, redistributed, recycled or responsibly disposed of. The goal is to reduce unnecessary environmental impact and support both local communities and future outdoor adventures.

Collection Dates & Times:
SATURDAY, August 30: 2PM – 5PM
SUNDAY, August 31: 12PM – 6PM
MONDAY, September 1: 9AM – 6PM
NOTE: No dumping. Collection ONLY during listed hours.
Location:
Large Parking Lot West of Kiwanis: 5125 Mill Street. Reno, NV 89502 After dropping off bicycles at Kiwanis, participants can follow all signage/cones to the lot to the west where volunteers will guide you through the drop off process.
Scout Mom Julie Tullgren is one of the primary organizers, “The Scout Troop is partnering with Kiwanis, to help reduce the impact to the bike program. As small organizations, handling such inflow all within one or two weeks of the year can be overwhelming… but if we come together as a community of non-profit groups and businesses, it makes taking on big environmental tasks manageable!”
To support the Scouts’ ongoing environmental and community service programs, a $10 donation is requested per bag for use of recycling and upcycling services provided on-site, as well as trash disposal.
"This event lets Burners contribute to Reno’s community while lightening their load and keeping usable camp gear out of the trash," said Leah Wzientek from Gear Hut, Reno’s local used gear shop. "Leave No Trace is a fundamental principle for us, both on and off the playa. We’re offering an eco-friendly solution for those who can’t take their camping gear home, while ensuring locals have access to affordable outdoor equipment and raising funds for local non-profits.”
Collected goods will be cleaned, sorted and redistributed to local shelters, Scout programs, Gear Hut’s non-profit accounts, and other community initiatives. Let’s ensure that what survives the Playa lives on with purpose. Dumpsters will also be onsite for unsalvageable goods and bagged trash.
Other community partners and organizations that will be recipients of salvageable goods include:
Kiwanis Bike Program: Non profit bike outreach and education
Gear Hut: Used outdoor gear shop
Hope Community Church: Food pantry
Reno Burrito Project: Houseless outreach
