We made it! It's month 2 of #52RenoHikes and WAHOOO you're crushing it. This month, we're inspiring you to head up the hill and explore up in the mountains. So grab your microspikes, snowshoes or skis.
Spooner Lake State Park and Mt. Rose Meadows are two stellar places to explore in the snow, and we're throwing out a HUGE APPRECIATION SHOUT OUT to Nevada Nordic! This amazing non-profit organization is breaking down the barriers to cross country skiing by creating FREE access to miles of maintained trails for the community. They groom for classic and skate xc skiing, with a dedicated side path for those exploring on showshoes!
Want to stay in town and not worry about chain controls? Have you done the classic N Hike? Yes? Then how about taking it on it the winter! It's a great chance to score views of downtown dusted with snow. Just be aware that on warmer days, it could be muddy. (Grab a complimentary boot brush from the shop, courtesy of KTMB to keep the car clean, and prevent the spread of invasive species!)
Three other local Reno parks that we love:
Anderson Park is a great way to get out and moving during a "south Reno" errand day. There is a 1.6 mile loop (ish), and if you're lucky, some cute cows will be out in the pastures. Ballardini Ranch Trail Head this is a great figure 8 trail that can be hiked or biked. We love heading to this trail when the big NV skies are moody for a cloud show. Rosewood Nature Study Area (this park is closed on Sundays!) Bring your binoculars for stellar bird watching opportunities, and leave the dogs/bikes at home.
Keep tagging us! @GearHutReno on instagram or FB, and include the tag #52RenoHikes! Together, we can build out a fantastic outdoor resource for our community, with up to date condition reports of the trails we're hiking each week.
