Burning Man is a celebration of creativity, community, and radical self‑reliance, but between prepping for what could be the dustiest time of your life, and and handling the cleanup afterward can overwhelming. That’s where Reno’s local used gear shop, Gear Hut and Scout Troop 1847 step in with their annual Burning Man Collection Event, happening September 5–7.

Whether you’re gearing up for the playa or trying to lighten your load on the way home, here’s how both organizations make sustainable stewardship simple:

Gear Hut is Reno’s Best Spot for Sustainable Playa Gear

If you’re a Burner looking to source gear responsibly, Gear Hut is your go‑to option upon flying into Reno. We specialize in high‑quality used outdoor gear, meaning you can outfit your camp sustainably while saving money. Shade structures, coolers, sleeping pads, goggles, hydration packs... it call comes through our doors, used but functional and ready for some adventures out on the playa. We love helping stoked Burners find exactly what they need without buying new.

Choosing used gear keeps equipment in circulation and reduces waste.

Important Reminder: Post BM, we do NOT accept Playa‑Used Consignment Without Proper Cleaning

We love BM season, but we have to protect our shop and our customers. Gear Hut does NOT accept playa‑used items for consignment unless they’ve been fully cleaned.

The alkaline dust is harsh on fabrics, zippers, metals, and electronics. Items must be:

  • Thoroughly washed

  • Fully dried

  • Free of playa dust

  • In good working condition

If you don’t have time to clean your gear, no worries. That’s where the Scouts come in with an awesome post burn collection event.

Gear Hut + Scout Troop 1847: Making Post‑Burning Man Cleanup Easier, Cleaner, and More Sustainable

  • Scouts Burning Man Trash Collection Fundraiser

The Scouts’ Annual Collection: They’ll Take Everything!

Scout Troop 1847 hosts a massive post‑Burning Man collection each year, and they’re ready for your gear, trash, food, and water. They accept just about everything, including items that Gear Hut cannot take!

Including but not limited to:

-mattresses, pillows and bedding -unopened food/water -cleaning supplies -bagged trash -toiletries -storage bins

-Miscellaneous! The Scouts will find a home for it!

Even better: The Scouts handle all cleaning, repairing, sorting, and prepping of camping gear so it can be responsibly reused or redistributed through Gear Hut.

Your dusty tent? Your playa‑crusted cooler? They’ll take it.

This fundraiser supports Scout environmental programs and community outreach, and $10 per bag/bin helps cover recycling and disposal costs.

Why It All Matters

Burning Man’s Leave No Trace ethos doesn’t end at once you leave the playa. By choosing to use the Scouts collection event as your one stop disposal, we're creating a space where Reno can embrace Burning Man culture... seeing used items get properly cleaned and rehomed within Reno's community, from used gear being rehomed through a small business, bedding being sent to women's shelters and food being distributed to our unhoused communities...

Gear Hut is proud to partner with again with Scout Troop 1847 to make sustainable choices easier for Burners, before, during, and after the event.

See you before the burn at the shop, and after burn at the collection event! See more details on the Scout's FB event page!
