Finding Community in Reno through Film and Adventure

As Reno continues to grow and evolve, many newcomers, and even longtime locals, are searching for something deeper than just a magical place to call home with so much access out their back doors.... They’re also searching for a strong mountain community. For connection. To find “their scene” here in the biggest little city.

Gear Hut is hosting an upcoming community event catered to breaking down the hard steps of finding folks to connect with.

Join us for an evening centered around adventure, resilience, and belonging as we gather for a free screening of Sierra to Baker, a documentary following Stratton Matteson and friends on an extraordinary 2,000-mile, 100-day human-powered journey from the Sierra Nevada to Mt. Baker.

More than an adventure film, Sierra to Baker is a celebration of the values that bring outdoor communities together: respect for nature, sustainability, friendship, and the shared experiences that shape us along the way.

But this evening is about more than just watching a film. As we celebrate the joy and freedom found in the mountains, we also pause to acknowledge the fragility of life in these wild places. Recent tragedies, including the loss of Stratton Matteson, featured in the film, as well as those lost in this season’s Lake Tahoe avalanche, remind us why creating strong community off the mountain matters just as much as the time we spend on it.

This event was created to hold space for both inspiration, healing and finding those connections.

Attendees will have the opportunity to connect through silly icebreaker games, meet local organizations and outdoor groups in person, and build meaningful relationships with others who share a love for the outdoors. The goal is simple but powerful: to foster a more inclusive, resilient, and deeply rooted mountain-town culture here in Reno, one where no one feels alone or an outsider in their pursuit of adventure.

Whether you’re new to Reno, searching for deeper local connections, or just looking for an evening of meaningful storytelling and community, join us on Thursday, June 9th for "Screen to Scene" a film showing featuring "Sierra to Baker".

Screen to Scene Event Details:

Doors Open: 5:45 PM. Join us early for icebreaker games, free raffle ticket opportunities, and a chance to meet local organizations and community groups.

Film Begins: 6:30 PM

Admission: FREE! Because we should all get the opportunity to show up in this community! Please note that seating is limited, so RSVP to reserve your SEAT.

While the event itself is free, guests are encouraged to bring cash to participate in a fundraising raffle benefiting the Sierra Avalanche Center and the Washoe County Search & Rescue Team. Thanks to generous donations from Cafe Whitney, BaseCamp Climbing Gym, Cosmos Snack Bar, Coalition Snow, Mount Rose Ski Tahoe, Caleb Blackwell, Mesa Rim, At the Summit Arts, Lisa Alaska, Steamboat Hot Springs, Snow flower Studios, A Wheel Good Time, Sky Tavern Bike Park and many more... for over $3,000 worth of raffle prizes!

Come for the film. Stay for the community. Win some prizes. Support local organizations.
