Family Hikes w/GBOS

Great Basin Outdoor School Family Hikes
GBOS X Gear Hut's April Family Hike Group!

Last month, Gear Hut and GBOS teamed up for our monthly Family Hike at Washoe Lake’s Sand Dune Trek. This hike was a nice, child friendly, two-hour stroll, totally about 2.5 miles in distance.

We had a great turn out of families and friends who joined us on our adventure, and we thank all who came out, and for Washoe Lake State Park for providing complimentary entrance to the park and for letting Ranger Kim guide us!

We explored the east shore of Washoe Lake, spotted with various native species that claim this space as their home. Often spotted here are Red-Tailed Hawks, Bald Eagles, Osprey, and American White Pelicans! Our trail guide Kim also brought pelts, native arrowheads, a rattlesnake's tail, and some other treasures to pass around and share their importance to this beautiful habitat. We also collected a bag of trash that Sue from GBOS carried for us throughout the hike - remember to pack in and pack out your trash on all trails to preserve their beauty and the ecosystem around it!

Here is one of our awesome hikers passing around a coyote pelt that Kim brought to share with our group!

If you didn’t get to make it out to Washoe Lake last weekend - we’d love your company on our May Family Hike. Gear Hut and GBOS will be back at Washoe Lake State Park on Saturday, May 14th @ 10AM-12PM to conquer not the Sand Dunes, but instead Dead Man’s Creek to the gazebo! Don't forget, this hike is for all ages and hobbyists, so invite a friend or a loved one to come with you! Ranger Kim says that the flowers should be in peak season for this hike, so we'll hopefully get to see lots of mules ears, lupines and desert peach!

If you are planning on joining us on May 14th, please register and consider donating to Great Basin Outdoors School @ www.Great Basin-os.org/guided-hikes
